In contrary to a printed book, piracy of digitally published information can be done in seconds, by a multiplication of millions! Publishing companies have to make large investments in technology to begin publishing the material electronically and with a high degree of quality in electronic formats. They must purchase storage equipment, setup an eCommerce infrastructure and integrate their online and offline efforts. It must be taken into account that once the infrastructure is in place, publishers will experience "cannibalization", a rapid decrease of traditional printed "hard copies". Therefore, digital industries rely heavily upon security implemented in distributed documents. There is no other practical way to enforce copyrights.

How does it work?

Document Protection allows secure distribution of digital documents in PDF format. It provides information rights management (IRM) functionality as part of a DRM strategy to protect and have control over digital information. Only the user who has the appropriate CRYPTO-BOX can open, edit or print the PDF document. Multiple authorization levels and implementation of an expiration date are available. This provides real security compared to just a password based solution - a password can be known by many persons or may have been already compromised. Documents are protected with 128 bit encryption and the encryption key is stored safely inside the CRYPTO-BOX. Document Protection is ideal for purchased eBooks, Internet delivery, CDROM distribution, company internal documents, subscription services and regular updates. This solution consists of two packages:

Distributor's package

It suits the needs of vendors/distributors of protected document files, and includes the following: Virtual printer driver (PDF Converter), allowing customers to convert documents to PDF format. Document Protection part of the SmarxOS Application Framework - which allows to encrypt/protect PDF documents, program CRYPTO-BOX modules, and process remote update requests (to extend the usage time of the protected document, for more information on Remote Update click here).

End-user's package

This is what the end-users will receive from the vendor/distributor. It includes: PDF Viewer - an interactive application to view secure PDF files A SmarxOS formatted CRYPTO-BOX which was configured to open the protected document Remote Update Utility (if needed)

How to get it

Document Protection is included in the CRYPTO-BOX Professional Protection Kit. It can be fully tested with the Evaluation Kit and ordered as option (one-time fee) for your customer specific CRYPTO-BOX modules.
