In contrary to a printed book, piracy of digitally published information can be done in seconds, by a multiplication of millions! Publishing companies have to make large investments in technology to begin publishing the material electronically and with a high degree of quality in electronic formats. They must purchase storage equipment, setup an eCommerce infrastructure and integrate their online and offline efforts. It must be taken into account that once the infrastructure is in place, publishers will experience "cannibalization", a rapid decrease of traditional printed "hard copies".
Therefore, digital industries rely heavily upon security implemented in distributed documents. There is no other practical way to enforce copyrights.
